Reno Grill Filet

How It Began

The Francovich family’s restaurant and bar roots started with Eli Francovich who migrated to the U.S. from Petrovac, Yugoslavia in 1850. Nine years later in 1859, Eli moved to Reno, Nevada, and opened The Wine House, one of Reno’s very first restaurants and bars. Located in the heart of downtown Reno, The Wine House rose to success in bringing family and friends together to bond over delicious food and spirits.

After operating continuously for 87 years, the fourth generation American Francovich’s decided to close the doors of the Wine House to pursue other life goals. Eli, his son Spiro, and Spiro’s children kept the family’s traditions and the Wine House alive until 1957. And 42 years later in 1999, Sam Francovich, 5th generation Nevadan, decided to return his family back to its restaurant and bar roots by opening The Grill.

Continuing the Francovich Family Traditions

Sam Francovich opened The Grill at Quail Corners in 1999 as a way to bring back family tradition and follow his own passions of running a local restaurant and bar. Though this job isn’t easy, nothing brings joy to the Francovich family like seeing happy customers enjoying the food and drinks specially prepared by their team.

The Grill has brought the family back to its roots and prides itself on serving wonderful food by people who care. We provide you with a fine dining experience along with the best lunch and dinner options in Reno that will make you want to come back!

reno happy hour

In preparation for our 20th Anniversary, we spoke to one of our loyal customers, Sean Gamble, and she was kind enough to tell us 20 reasons why she loves The Grill! Sean's been dining at the best restaurant in Reno for years and knows Sam and Diane very well. Check out why Sean loves the Grill!

  1. Watching people attempt to open the front door on the right to exit the restaurant. In 20 years, that door has never been unlocked, yet 80 percent of the patrons will try.
  2. The various attempts Sam and Diane have made to direct people on the right path to the restrooms.
  3. Knowing you’ll see at least four people you know.
  4. Knowing you’ll see at least four people you want to avoid, but you go anyway.
  5. Being greeted with a big beautiful smile, unless Sam is the hostess.
  6. Watching to see who snags the biggest cookie when the plate is delivered with the check. Also, waiting to see who devours the last remaining cookie on the plate.
  7. Being greeted with big grins from everyone in the open kitchen upon arrival.
  8. Francovich Egg Nog season. The season hasn’t arrived without it.
  9. Shelly. Simply Shelly. We think she started there before they opened.
  10. The high top, center court, “see and be seen” tables, when you don’t want to hide your crazy.
  11. The Patio for the Spring, Summer and unseasonably warm fall and winter days. The sunshine adds vitamin D to go with your meal/wine, whichever comes first.
  12. Private parties in Vino Reno. Sometimes you want to hide your crazy.
  13. The visits from the sparkly red-nosed Santa with his candy canes in December. We think he spends a little time in Vino Reno prepping for the Grill visits.
  14. Sitting a table away from any one of our elected officials, including the Governor, Mayor, council, commission, Congress and legislature. They have to eat too.
  15. The wine menu, everything on the wine menu.
  16. Guessing how many pounds of candy is in the 5-foot tall candy dish, and wondering what year the pieces at the bottom went in.
  17. The Chef’s ability to modify dishes for the hard to please kids, and some of those other people. You know who you are.
  18. The Francovich Manhattan on the daily special menu. Every day. Day after day, after day, except on Sundays. Yeah, the Grill is closed on Sundays, but you can take a bottle to go on Saturday to complete your week.
  19. The absolute willpower it takes to pass the fresh bread baker’s table without grabbing your own piping hot baguette and sinking your teeth into the still steaming dough.
  20. The love and hugs from Sam and Diane.

Swing by the Grill at Quail Corners on Saturday, November 16th between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. to celebrate 20 years of culinary bliss with Sam and Diane.

You don’t have to be a connoisseur of red wine to enjoy a glass of it every now and again. It can be difficult to differentiate between the varying types of red wines, however. Which red wine is the darkest? Which one is the driest? Which red wine should I enjoy with a steak dinner? Finding the best red wine food pairings can be hard. Here we list 6 different types of red wines and the foods they pair the best with, so that the next time you’re out with friends or on a date, you can show off your red wine knowledge.

Merlot

If you’re new to the world of red wine, it’s highly suggested that you start with a nice Merlot. Merlot is positioned in the middle of the red wine spectrum and has a medium body and color. This red wine has notes of red fruits such as cherries and finishes off very smoothly. The great thing about this wine is that it pairs with just about any food you can think of. Being a medium-bodied wine in the middle of the red wine spectrum gives Merlot its versatility. You can pair Merlot with roasted veggies, including tomatoes, poultry such as turkey or duck, lightly-spiced dark meats, and pasta sauces.

Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is the most popular light-bodied red wine there is. This red wine pairs well with most dishes because of its rich fruit profile and complexity. You can taste hints of red fruits like strawberries and raspberries, as well as earthy flavors and spices in this wine. It’s high acidity also makes it perfect for pairing with highly acidic foods and sauces. We suggest you try a Pinot Noir with an earthy dish that may include mushrooms or truffles, and meat ranging from duck and chicken to pork and veal, and even salmon.

Zinfandel

Zinfandels are very versatile. You can find this type of wine as a red, pink, or white. Red Zinfandels are light-bodied but have a bold taste thanks to their moderate tannins and high acidic levels. While their color is lighter than that of a Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, a red Zinfandel will have a rather high alcohol content level. This dry wine has flavors of berries and jam as well as hot pepper, usually starting out sweet and followed by a tobacco-like smoky finish. We suggest pairing this wine with a barbecue or curry dish. You can pair this wine with most meats and bold flavors.

Malbec

This medium to full-bodied wine is dry, with a dark, almost inky, purple color. Malbec is popularly grown in Argentina and has flavors of plum and blackberries. The rich and elegant textures in this wine make it perfect for pairing with leaner red meats and lighter cuts such as turkey and pork. Malbec pairs fabulously with dry cheeses, like blue cheese, and is also delicious with spicy and sweet flavors like curry and barbecue.

Cabernet Sauvignon

If you're a fan of red wine, you'll probably enjoy a nice Cabernet Sauvignon from time to time. Cabernet Sauvignon is a dark full-bodied red wine typically known for being the most popular red wine there is. The flavors in this wine vary from plum and black cherry to hints of vanilla, black pepper, and tobacco. The tannins are very high in Cabernet Sauvignon which, mixed with its rich flavors, makes this wine perfect for pairing with thick steaks or chops. This is the perfect red wine to pair with juicy red meat and dishes with heavy flavor.

Syrah (Shiraz)

Syrah, also known as Shiraz, is one of the darkest, full-bodied red wines available. Also having similar tastes of blackberries and black cherries, as well as notes of chocolate and spice, make Syrah a versatile wine. You can pair Syrah with roasted, grilled or smoked meats such as veal, beef, and duck. It's even a great match with barbecue and really compliments just about any type of game. If you're in the mood for hamburgers, this is also a tasty wine choice to match.

Lunch Dinner

There are so many different wines and tastes to certain wines. It is hard to keep track of which ones have more oaky tastes or the smooth citrusy aromas. If you love a glass every now and then, you definitely don’t have to be an expert. But if you've ever wanted to be more involved in the wine community, the first step is having knowledge of different wines. Another step is knowing how to pair wines to foods, desserts, and cheeses. We created a list of white wine food pairing suggestions. This will guide you down the path of becoming the wine critic you were meant to be!

Riesling:

A Riesling is a lighter wine with a fresh aroma. Usually reminding its consumers of having a fresh apple smell. Since this wine can be made either dry or sweet, it is easy to pair with different foods. More of the dry wines pair well with salty dishes since the acidity in Riesling can easily balance the food. While an off-dry wine can be paired with Asian and Indian cuisines, this wine can tame the heat in these spicier dishes.

White Wine food Pairing suggestions

Chardonnay:

This is one of the most popular white wines that are bought. This is because of the versatility of its grapes. They are the easiest to grow in different climates, which means you can get different flavors from the grapes. However, this wine can also be misunderstood due to its layering of flavors. Depending on where the grapes are grown and how they are fermented, Chardonnay can have many different tastes. However, our white wine food pairing suggestions for this wine is pretty simple. This wine pairs well with fatty fish, chicken, pork, or fish dishes in rich sauces.

Pinot Grigio:

Another well known white wine would be the Pinot Grigio (Gris). Its grapes are known to come from Oregon or Alsace. This wine is known to be crisp and on the dry side. Having more fruity flavors mingled in its depths. This wine is particularly versatile but the Alsatian Pino Gris has flavors that best suit Thai dishes. Also, cuisines with a little more spice such as Chinese. You can also pair this wine with light fish dishes. Its flavors will complement the lightness of the dish and the seafood in it.

Semillon:

Another grand white wine is Semillon. If this doesn’t sound familiar, here is a crash course on this type of white wine. This wine is usually mixed with Sauvignon Blanc. This is because of Semillon’s low acidity, combined with Sauvignon Blanc gives it a unique freshness. If you are looking for a treat, this sweet wine is perfect for just that. This wine pairs well with seafood (shellfish), pork, veal, and chicken.

Sauvignon Blanc:

This wine is known for its dryness. Sauvignon Blanc is also very different in the herbal aspects. This wine is made with herbal flavors such as bell pepper, grass, gooseberry, and jalapeno. This uniqueness might be strange but a lot of wine lovers enjoy its crispness. Since it has earthy tones, some of our white wine food pairing suggestions would be drinking it with herb filled meals. Pairing it with seafood, poultry, and salad are also great choices.

Pair Our Food and Wines:

Hopefully, this starter list will help you begin your journey in the wine world. It is important to try different kinds to find the blends and creations you enjoy the most. While you go on this journey, check out The Grill at Quail Corners for a Reno fine dining experience. We are one of the best Reno restaurants and have multiple sensational wines to try. Our staff will help you pair them to a meal which compliments its flavors. Or you can use the newfound knowledge and try to pair them yourself!

Is there food on the menu?

Many restaurants that offer a happy hour in Reno don't include food on the happy hour menu as part of the offer. Happy hour drinks are great, but you'll definitely want something to munch on while you enjoy your evening. Many people head to happy hour directly from work and want to enjoy an entire meal. You'll want to check that the happy hour menu has a few different options from you to choose from. Depending on who you're dining with, one or two vegetarian options may be necessary. Does the menu have options that can serve as an entire meal? There are so many things to think about! Luckily The Grill has exactly what you need in a Reno happy hour! Choose from a $4, $6, and $8 menu of high quality, fresh dishes. We have light snacks as well as heavier fare to satisfy any craving!

Wine, beer, and cocktails?

Forget about a happy hour that only offers beer! You'll want to make sure that there is a beverage available for each person you're dining with! Choosing a happy hour that has a few different options available is ideal. Are there at least a few different drinks available from each category (beer, wine cocktails)? Also, make sure that your drinks are actually a good deal! Some restaurants use "happy hour" as a way to sell high priced drinks. At the Grill, you can choose from $3, $4, and $5 drinks from each category! We guarantee you will find something you like!

Loyalty rewards?

If you've found a spot with a great happy hour, then be sure they offer some type of reward system where you can accrue points after each visit. You'll end up getting more bang for your buck if you present your card after each visit. Be sure that signing up for a rewards card is free. Ask your server to explain the rewards system to find out what exactly you're earning. Here at the Grill, we make it clear and simple. For every 200 points earned, you will receive a $15.00 loyalty certificate. Typically, you will earn one point for every dollar spent, but promotional deals sometimes earn more. You can also earn 25 bonus points for providing an email and 50 bonus points for referring a friend! That alone gets you almost halfway to your first certificate! If you don't feel like carrying a card around then search 'Royalty Rewards' in your App Store and download!
